One of these things is not like the other

If you’ve perused Facebook at all in the last week, you’ve undoubtedly been bombarded by tagging and newsfeed announcements of your friends doing this “25 Things” bit where you list 25 random facts about yourself. It’s amazing how something can take off so quickly. One minute, it’s nothing. The next minute, it seems like every person on your friends list has hopped on board. I am a bit of a Facebook traditionalist so I ignore any and all application invitations and chains like this that spring up. I made an exception in this instance because the person who was supposed to be ignoring it with me gave into the peer pressure. Since it took an absurdly long time to put this list together, I figured it was worthy of a cross post here in blogworld.

Without further ado, 25 Things you don’t (and probably never cared to) know about me…

1. Orange roses are my favorite flower.

2. Some of the most profound pieces of prose I’ve ever read have been from the New York Times’ “Modern Love” column.

3. I’m paranoid about making spelling errors on my BlackBerry and reread each email at least three times.

4. I die a little inside each time space constraints force me to abbreviate “you” with “u” while texting. More often than not, I will rewrite the entire thing so I don’t need to employ the short hand.

5. I wear my class ring because it’s a visual reminder for me of triumph over all the weird stuff that happened before and promise to myself that I can deal with anything that comes after.

6. I thought I would be the first person in my circle to write a book and, yet, someone is in the process of beating me to it.

7. I go to church but I don’t know how much I believe…but I would like to believe.

8. Until middle school, I was intent on changing my name to my middle name because nobody spelled my first name properly.

9. I was born in Japan (though I usually just tell people I’m from Annapolis because it avoids the whole, “nowhere is home, really,” discussion).

10. I’m an insomniac and it’s almost impossible for me to sleep in a bed that isn’t mine (this makes work trips fun).

11. I started college at 16.

12. I have an unending fascination with politics, which I sometimes confuse with wanting to go back to the campaign world in a professional capacity.

13. I want lots of children, a dog, and a house with a white picket fence.

14. I want to have a rockstar career as a writer, policy analyst, and diplomat.

15. Sometimes I worry #13 and #14 are, for me (not generalizing for all women here), mutually exclusive. But I don’t worry too much because I’m still quite young.

16. I like flannel sheets, even in the summer.

17. I think it’s peculiar when people say they, “like to travel.” Who doesn’t like to get away from real life?

18. I used to be a voracious reader but I haven’t actually finished a book in a long time.

19. My claim to fame as a writer, thus far: I had a poem published when I was in the fifth grade in a collection of poetry by Maryland students. The contest was sponsored by Borders and the book was actually for sale in their stores.

20. My mother is an amazing artist and I can barely draw stick figures.

21. I say it doesn’t matter, but it does.

22. In the era of instant communication via text, email, twitter, FB, gchat, etc., I think it’s saying something if it takes one days to respond.

23. The thing I’m most pleased with in my apartment is the glossy, beautiful dining room table. The prospect of formal entertaining in a proper setting, even if I rarely do it, feels grown up.

24. I hate, hate, hate talking on the phone. Texting is the way to go.

25. This list took much longer to compile than expected.

Pita bread should not be used for communion

Jesus as crumbly bread is an odd representation. Moving on…

My best friend from college got married and bought a house last year. Another close friend got married this year and has begun the househunting process. Among the people I’ve kept in touch with since college, almost three years out now, I’m probably the closest with these two. Obviously, I’m beyond thrilled for them at these developments.

I’m not in the process of either of those things at the moment. Nowhere near, really. I can honestly say that fact doesn’t bother me. I rather enjoy my life as it is. It’s odd to start going through these changes in one’s social circle though. In many ways, they are now living a life entirely unique from my own. They are still the same fabulous people (with the added bonus of fabulous spouses), but it changes dynamics in an elusive, undefinable way.
